The Shorty Interview
with Geoffrey Notkin

What's your best tweet?
@Lachtoday @Norman_England Since we're all writing our memoirs, we should publish as a boxed set entitled "The Thing With Three Souls"
What are six things you could never do without?
Potato salad, rocket engines, cats, white wine, meteorites, my friends
How do you use Twitter in your professional life?
Daily and in every way: New contacts; promoting my books, TV shows and films, meeting exciting new science people, and then some.
What's your favorite Twitter app?
I like HootSuite but Destroy Twitter 2 is looking promising
Twitter or Facebook?
Twitter, no contest!
What was the funniest trend you've seen?
What feature should Twitter add?
A master login that would allow you to easily switch back and forth between multiple accounts
Who do you wish had a Twitter feed but doesn't?
My mom; great sense of humor and a super-fast typist. Sadly, she's been gone for 14 years, so might be tough even for Twitter to reach her.
What are some words or phrases you refuse to shorten for brevity?
Is there someone you want to follow you who doesn't already? If so, who?
That's easy: The mighty @TheJeffBridges my favorite living actor. Also @BBC_TopGear please, if you can put a word in for me : )
Have you ever unfollowed someone? Who and why?
I have unfollowed a few tweeps who claimed I could get "filthy rich" via some sort of nebulous social media idea #doubtful
Why should we vote for you?
If I win a Shorty, I will place it atop the most magnificent meteorite in my collection, take a photo, and post it everywhere.
Terms you wish would start trending on Twitter right now?
What's the most interesting connection you've made through Twitter?
@SuzeeTwo is now my film director and a fellow producer @UnBizMovie feature film. Thanks Twitter!
Hashtag you created that you wish everyone used?
While watching a first-run episode of my TV series @MeteoriteMen -- #IGotBleepedAgain
How do you make your tweets unique?
I can actually spell, and I never use the word "awesome"
What inspires you to tweet?
Exciting science news, discoveries, beautiful photographs, strange birds, weird thoughts and comments from my odd friends.
Ever get called out for tweeting too much?
Not yet, but I have certainly done that to others!
140 characters of advice for a new user?
Find unusual tales and images to share; follow people who truly interest you; be funny but courteous
How long can you go without a tweet?
That depends whether or not I'm on a meteorite expedition in the screaming wilderness at the time.
What question are we not asking here that we should?
"When are you coming over for dinner?"
How do you imagine Twitter changing?
More users, more hashtags, increased design options. It's great already, but I imagine they'll still invent more #GoodiesForTweeps
Who do you admire most for his or her use of Twitter?
@NickAstronomer A kind, generous, brilliant, astronomer always sharing his passion with the world, and probably some exoplanets too
Who is the funniest person on Twitter that you follow?
That award goes to my former lead singer and full-time music legend @Lachtoday
What is one of the biggest misconceptions of Twitter?
That it's "like Facebook but with shorter posts"
Why should people follow you?
I try to concoct an entertaining daily mix of dry British wit and science news.
Can you name some one-of-a-kind Twitter accounts that you follow?
How do you decide what to tweet?
That's like asking @Neilhimself where he gets his ideas from #CantBeExplained
How do you use social media to motivate yourself or others to live a healthier life?
For me, living a healthy life means blathering on about science. So, that part is easy, I just do extra blathering on Twitter.
How has social media helped bring your family closer together and #keepgoodgoing?
I'm the only person in my family who tweets, plus we live thousands of miles apart for a reason #NotApplicable
Why'd you start tweeting?
Former publicist said: "I've heard of a new social media thing called Twitter." I said: "Not ANOTHER one?" but soon knew it was for me!
Has Twitter changed your life? If yes, how?
Most definitely! Twitter has led to a feature film role, interviews with top radio shows and publications, and actual real, new friends.
What do you wish people would do more of on Twitter?
I love a good contest with weird and unusual giveaways; you really can't have too many contests.
How will the world change in the next year?
@SeaShepherd ends commercial whaling; @thenasaman starts new space program; @LucasTurnbloom dazzles planet with graphic novel
What are some big Twitter faux pas?
Bad language, TrueTwit "verification," arguments with tweeps who have different viewpoints, advertising your work via direct messages
What will the world be like 10 years from now?
Very crowded but with excellent tech gear and a thriving private sector space program. Also, a new kind of calorie-free pizza. Yay!
